Fisher Gold Bug IIFeb 27, 2013Simply the best for small flakes and nuggets using the small DD coil. You will detect gold if you are over it. (May sound obvious but still the key to finding it and the reason most beginners get disappointed after one or two trips with nothing to show for the effort) Takes patience and practice to slow sweep properly and keep it ground balanced. Run it slightly hot (positive feedback) and take your time. I generally use the Whites GMT with larger coil to locate a patch in open ground and then work the patch with the Fisher GoldBug II.
I'll also go back with the Gold bug II detector afterward in many situations if I know there's more small gold there. My personal preference is for two machines in case you have a problem with one of them and are remotely located.
Either of these machines will do the trick but like most gold specific machines one will compliment the other. These are my two best machines for the money. I've owned the MXT with all three coils and the Fisher Gold Bug Pro Detector with the small 5" coil, in the end these two are my go to nugget shooters and will always be pending a future break-through in the technology.

Manual Ground BalanceFeb 11, 2012Manual ground balancing doesn't bother me. I prefer it. And, you do not have 're-balance with every swing'. This just isn't true. I go out almost every day, in the AZ deserts and yes, you have to recheck from time to time. But, if you see a 'change' in the rock/ground formations, expect to re-balance.
Keep in mind that, lacking visual readouts, auto-balancing, etc, the Gold bug detector is the lowest frequency MD available, at 71khz. I hit on 4 thumb-sized rocks today, took them home, and after closer examination, they actually had tiny pieces/specs of gold in them! (Needed a pretty powerful magnifier to see it.) This is why the detector hit on them. I've never seen gold so small But, this is exactly why the GB2 is what it is.
I like my XP Deus wireless detector and have hunted with it the last 20 times out. I also used it in planted hunts last weekend it worked great! I could swing it as fast as I wanted and it still heard the targets, the coverage was good, and I did not get any interference running on 11.7 kHz frequency. We have figured out how to tweak them to get those deep coins too and it worked for me in the Challenge Hunt Sunday. I should have used it in our Deep Competition Hunt too because I got way too much interference from E-Tracs, Explorers, and a power line. I guess I sold too many E-Tracs and Explorers around here! I have not missed my E-Trac hunting lately even though I have been using it for 3 years. The XP Deus is so much lighter, really quick, and found me some nice stuff. This new innovation with this wireless detector is second to none.
I just used the XP Deus Wireless Detector and already found my First Shield Nickel. Wow the XP Deus is a coin hunting machine.
Ok thought I could not afford the XP Deus one but the day I got one the Liberty Quarters 1888 and 1884 WOWOWOWOWOWOW. Now my wife wants one MY MY MY MY I love the lightness and the fact it was wireless. Its second to none and I have tried them all.I have been detecting for over 30 years and the T2 is the only detector I have ever owned that has increased in value. I bought my T2 in 2007 for $799 and have found a ton of great stuff with it and had many years of enjoyment. I recently upgraded to the LTD which made my original T2 the 2nd best detector on the planet. My wife and I had some financial difficulty recently and had to sell my original T2 hoping to get $500 for it-Imagine my surprise when it sold on eBay for almost 3 times what I originally paid! I was able to take care of my financial issue pay off a few other bills and then take the wife out for a really nice dinner-needless to say she loves Teknetics just as much as I do! She also won’t complain when I am ready to get another new Teknetics detector which I will! I owe you guys one! Thanks Tek!

I've had a T2 for about 3 or 4 years and getting ready to get the 2nd one. This is my tip on the Teknetic t2. If you get a good target signal and you dig your hole and then the target signal disappears and you don't hear anything, 99.9% of the time it will be in the lose dirt in the bottom of the hole. Works every time. Another every important tip is don't let the VDI numbers fool you. I was digging a drained lake and I keep getting a certain VDI number ( .22 shells casings) so I moved down the beach and got the same number and thought it was another .22 shell and it turned out to be a ladies 1924 gold class ring. Another time I was digging alot of shot gun shells and got the same VDI number range and it turned out to be a confederate script "I" coat button, so now you know why I dig just about every good target.Dick WaltersHamlet, NC
